Dry Eyes

The flow of tears on the eyes is responsible for the lubrication and constant moisture to maintain comfort in the eyes. Tears are made of oil that act as lubricant, water to preserve moisture, mucus to evenly spread antibodies along with special proteins that are responsible to protect the eyes from possible infection. All these should be properly present in the eyes because absence of one of these will result to dry eyes.

Without the presence of tears in eyes, a person will possibly experience:

  • Redness of the eyes
  • Itching
  • Blurring
  • Light sensitivity
  • Pain

Ironically, when a person experiences dry eyes, the eyes will have tears running down the cheeks but the tears that flow down the eyes are not lubricant itself. It is just that the eyes send a distress signal to the nervous system to compensate for the dryness thus resulting in tears to flow. But these tears do not protect the eyes properly that is why treatment is really necessary for most cases.

Causes of Dry Eyes

The main reason of dry eyes is the imbalance of tear production of the eyes but aside from this there are other reasons why dry eyes happen.

  1. Air conditioning - air conditioner can cause your eyes to dry.
  2. Menopause - women in the menopause stage often experience dry eyes.
  3. Diseases - Some of these diseases are collagen vascular diseases, Siogren's syndrome and even rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. LASIK surgery - those people who experience dry eye symptoms like eye redness, burning sensation in the eyes, and excessive tears will likely to worsen after the procedure of LASIK is performed.

This generally happens as the nerves in cornea are cut during the LASIK procedure and these nerves that are cut are responsible for secretion of tears.

Those patients that those experience dry eyes before the operation will likely to return to normal eye condition after the operation but those who have regularly experience dry eyes is not a good candidate for LASIK surgery.
