Each pair of eyes is not identical. One characteristic of one pair of eyes may be not be the same as another pair of eyes. One problem that one person has with his or her eyes may not be the same problem as his or her mother or any distant relatives. That is why custom LASIK is developed.
Custom LASIK is also popularly known as wavefront or wavefront guided LASIK because individualized corrections of the eyes are can only be achieved through this process rather than the traditional method of LASIK.
The total quality of vision varies depending on the combination of higher order and lower order of aberrations much known as refractive errors. The higher order aberrations cause glare, night vision, halos, shadows and lower contrast sensitivity while lower order aberrations is responsible for astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness. It is important to note that regular LASIK can only treat the lower order aberrations while custom LASIK has the possibility to treat not just the lower order but also the higher order aberrations.
Custom LASIK uses three dimensional measurements to know how the eyes process images and custom LASIK also allow the laser to reshape the facade portion of the cornea. The licensed operating surgeon will use the wavefront device to safely transmit the rays of laser light directly to the eyes.
The eyes posterior portion then reflects the light back to the abberometry device through the eye's pupil. The reflected light's wave is then accepted and prearranged in a distinct pattern that will then display the results of the lower and higher aberrations. The results are then displayed in a three dimensional map which will then be relate to the laser and then matched to the position of the eyes. The licensed surgeon will now make an individualized procedure through the custom LASIK depending on the requirements of the patient eyes.
In order to get LASIK surgery, any interested patient should pass the FDA guidelines before the procedure can push through. The patients the degree of visionary defects, astigmatism, presence of myopia, thickness of cornea and the model of the laser system are just some the things to consider before any patient can undergo LASIK. But as a whole, custom LASIK is very safe to use as it is known to improve the total quality of vision in general. And compared to regular LASIK, custom LASIK is known to have less side effects.
